Sink Or Swim On Deadline Day
Ambition? By: Eric Hitchmo 31/08/2010

You‘ll have noticed that my degree of apathy correlates strongly with my amount of updates on this site. I apologise to the regular readers who enjoy my views, both of you, but I‘m sure you don‘t want to keep reading my drab misery, because that appears to be all I can muster. Sorry.

However we appear to have been thrown a lifeline, something to cling onto. Something to save us drowning in the sea of apathy that is Underhill. An article appeared touting the possible signing of a striker, perhaps two. Brilliant news I thought, it‘s been what I‘ve been screaming out for on here for some time. We‘ve found a bit of money and maybe we‘re looking at a decent name to help us push on after this poor start. Finally!

At the time of writing, we have only announced one name, Charlie Taylor who has been signed from Sutton United. Now I‘m not one to dismiss players without seeing them and you can reel of a long old list of players who we have picked from Non-League in recent years and have gone on to blossom, but if this turns out to be it, well it would be fair to say that this deadline day has been something of a disappointment. We must be forgiven perhaps expecting a name, with no disrespect intended towards Taylor.

Perhaps my hopes were somewhat inflated by a newspaper piece this morning saying that we had signed Izale McLeod. Now you can never believe what you read in the papers until you see official confirmation, but we had to put two and two together on this one. Well known name mentioned on the official site, newspaper confirms it‘s a done deal (usually just a rumour, surely) plus plenty of chatter about it, I was just waiting for the 100% confirmation. Who knows, it could be happening as I write and of course it didn‘t have to be done by 6pm as he is a free agent, but we just want some news on it! Forgive our impatience, we are just looking for something to cling on to.

Wading through a lot of crap on the message board, I eventually find a lot of people who have similar views to me on the state of the club at the moment. We are very very stale on the pitch. The chairman‘s questions are interesting to read but we know all about The Hive and how it will help in the future. But I‘ve said this until I‘m blue in the face, I just want a season to get excited about. Five years of nothingness does not appear to have any obvious end. We are losing fans by the match, less than 1300 home supporters watched Bury this weekend past, a name like Izale McLeod could provide a decent shot in the arm. I‘m not saying he‘ll put the lost thousand back on the gate, but a player of his calibre who has the ability to put the ball in the back of the net and turn a game should get you results and get the crowds back in slowly but surely.

I really hope that the rumour was true and we bring him, or someone of his calibre into the club. Perhaps paper talk has added unnecessary fuel to this fire but if it turns out that this is it, I won‘t half be gutted and feel somewhat let down by my club again. However, if the club do pull this one off, I will be full of praise for them and take back these harsh words. Finally a bit of on pitch ambition. Oh go on, just for a laugh...
