With a clean slate, Dean Brennan completely turned the fortunes of the club around with a terrific season overall. With a significant amount of deadwood cleared, Brennan set to work assembling a vastly improved squad from back to front. Ultimately it would end in heartbreak with playoff defeat (again) to Boreham Wood at The Hive and perhaps even more disappointingly, an FA Trophy demise on penalties in the Semi Final at Gateshead meaning Barnet’s 50+ year wait for a Wembley return continued.

Crowds returned but the side‘s form did not as an unsuccessful experiment with Harry Kewell was ended abruptly after just seven games of the season. Irishman Dean Brennan, who had joined the club as head coach with Kewell, took the reins with a brief to steady the ship and avoid relegation, which we did comfortably albeit only ending in 18th place. The goals against column was the highest it had ever been with 89 goals shipped in the season beating the record of 88 set the previous year. There were no cup runs to speak of either as Boreham Wood knocked us out of the both the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first time of asking at The Hive.

After a strong start to the season, John Still was moved upstairs with the club making a coup by signing Tony Cottee as player-manager in November. Things went sour and Barnet failed to win another away game all season. Still took the reins back in March but could not prevent the slide toward the relegation zone culminating in a winner-takes-all clash with Torquay United. We lost. Our ten year stay in the Football League was over.

In the mix from the start and enjoying a League Cup aggregate win over Norwich City, Barnet were looking strong throughout the season until a severe wobble in April meant that we had to make do with a Playoff spot, albeit by just a point. Having reaped the wards of promotion, Barnet had their squad decimated by a tribunal which released the players from their contracts. With almost all moving on, Gary Phillips cobbled together what he could to take on the third tier for the first time in the club’s history. Try as they might, the challenge was too mighty and we were comfortably relegated. However, we did enjoy some cup success taking Chelsea to a replay in the FA Cup third round.

Barnet’s attacking brand of football took Division Four by storm as we powered to the sharp end of the table. Typical of the time, the first two games yielded 21 goals at Underhill, a 4-7 defeat to Crewe and 5-5 draw with Brentford in the League Cup. Things settled down eventually but form stayed steady with the team sneaking into the Playoffs at the first time of asking. Despite a 1-0 win at home, a 2-0 reverse at Blackpool denied Barnet a dream first season.
